Coulee Baton Microwatershed

The Vermilion Soil and Water Conservation District, together with the Acadiana Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Council and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), is proud to announce the completion of the 90% cost-share phase of the Coulee Baton Microwatershed Rural Sewer Improvement Project.  These entities hosted a two public field demonstration days for the purpose of educating homeowners in the region about approved effluent reducing systems, and the proper care and maintenance of home septic systems.  Most importantly, homeowners within the microwatershed were encouraged to take advantage of the cost share funding available to repair or replacement their systems.  Emphasis was being placed on improving water quality and protecting public health.

Dr. Ernest Girouard, Chairman of Vermilion SWCD asserts, “This is an excellent opportunity for homeowners to learn about approved sewer systems and to receive 90 % of federal dollars toward your repair or replacement of your current sewer system.  This program is strictly voluntary and there is no obligation to participate."  Simply receiving a quote from a licensed contractor to repair or replace your system enabled homeowners to make a wise decision as whether or not to move forward with the cost share program.  This program was only available to the residents of the Coulee Baton Microwatershed for a short period of time.”

A total of 80 systems were repaired or replaced!
